Blood+ is an animated television series created by Production I.G. It premiered in Japan on October 8, 2005 on MBS/TBS, and continued with episodes every week (except on December 31, 2005) until September 23, 2006.[1][2] The series simultaneously aired on Animax, Sony's Japanese anime satellite channel, with its networks in Southeast Asia and South Asia airing the series later. It was directed by Junichi Fujisaku and features original character designs by Chizu Hashii. Fifty consecutive episodes were aired spanning four distinct seasons. Each season is differentiated by opening and ending themes from a variety of artists, with the final episode using the season one ending theme.
The series was first released to Region 2 DVD in Japan by Aniplex in thirteen volumes. The first volume contained two episodes, and each subsequent volume contained four more. The first volume was released December 21, 2005 and the final on December 29, 2006.[6] All of the volumes have Japanese language tracks with no subtitles. The first Region 1 DVDs were released on March 4, 2008, with a simultaneous release of a single five episode volume and a twenty-five episode box set.[5]
Steele was born on January 4, 1962, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York City, to a Catholic family,[15] and attended Edward R. Murrow High School in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn. His father (1921-1995) was of Polish and Russian descent and his mother (1922-2005) of Scottish-Irish, Norwegian, and Icelandic ancestry. He was raised in the Bensonhurst and Brighton Beach neighborhoods of Brooklyn.[16][17][18] Steele was the youngest of six children, with five older sisters.[19] His father fought in World War II[15] and later worked at a shipyard.[20] Steele started taking guitar lessons at age 12, before moving on to bass six months later.[19]
Steele formed the band in 1989 along with his childhood friends Josh Silver, Kenny Hickey and Sal Abruscato (later replaced by Johnny Kelly).[13] The band originally used the name "Repulsion", but had to change it in 1990 due to legal issues with the American grindcore band of the same name. The band then used the name "Subzero".[26] Steele had a tattoo in mind of a minus sign contained within the number 0 that he originally intended to represent the Subzero band logo.[26] After discovering that another band was already using the Subzero name, and with his tattoo in mind, Steele came up with the name "Type O Negative" after hearing a radio advertisement requesting donations of type O negative blood.[26] When Type O Negative signed with Roadrunner Records, Steele signed his recording contract with a mixture of Suave hair conditioner and chocolate syrup mixed with food dye, contrary to popular belief that it was his own blood and semen.[27]
In 2005, Type O Negative left Roadrunner Records. Steele had never been happy with the conditions of the recording contract and had described it as "a millstone around my neck".[40] Steele alleged that Type O Negative's split from Roadrunner Records, aside from a poor offer, had to do with an unauthorized release of a best-of compilation.[46] Steele remained on friendly terms with the staff at Roadrunner Records and in October 2005 he appeared on the Roadrunner United album to help celebrate the label's 25th anniversary.[18]
Steele went on to appear as a guest on the talk shows Ricki Lake, The Jerry Springer Show, and The Howard Stern Show. In 2003, Steele had an acting role in the episode "Exeunt Omnes" of the series Oz. In 2003, he appeared in the film Dirtbags (Armpit of Metal).[56] He followed this with a role in the 2005 film Bad Acid.[57] Steele is among the musicians featured in the 2011 documentary Living the American Nightmare.[58]
During 2005, Steele disappeared for an extended period with no explanation. Rumors of his death, terminal illness, and other speculations increased until the mystery was dispelled in an interview on the 2006 DVD Symphony for the Devil. In the interview Steele briefly mentions his incarceration in Rikers Island and "the psych ward at Kings County Hospital". Steele's family members had staged an intervention and insisted he check into a mental institution.[9] Steele later confirmed he had been suffering from paranoia caused by his heavy substance abuse.[9] Steele had been using cocaine since the age of 35, a decision for which he expressed great regret.[51][55] Steele then attended rehab for cocaine dependence and alcoholism,[55] and later served a 30-day prison term for assaulting a "love rival."[9][55] Steele made light of his incarceration by wearing a prison uniform on stage during live performances.

Today mistletoe is most commonly known for its ability to procure kisses for anyone who stands under it during the Christmas season. This tradition dates back several thousand years to a time when boughs of mistletoe were hung to protect against evil spirits and to promote fertility.1,2 Perhaps made possible by their wide distribution, mistletoe species have been used in folk medicine by cultures on almost every continent at some point in history. The use of mistletoe for holiday affection is only a minor example of the various ways in which mistletoe has been used throughout history and in different regions. In the last century, awareness of the medical potential of mistletoe has resurged as its efficacy in treating cancers has been investigated.
ML-I has also been shown to increase the number and cytotoxic activity of natural killer (NK) cells.36 Natural killer cells are large lymphocytes in the blood stream that are involved in the innate immune system, and they have the ability to kill any cell covered in antibody, virus-infected cells, and tumor cells.37 Monocytes and macrophages, two types of cells responsible for defending the body by destroying anything that is foreign to it, demonstrated a high affinity for lectins as compared to other lymphocytes, and gene expression and cytokine secretion were increased after 24 hours of incubation with these lectins.36 Cytokines are proteins secreted by lymphoid cells that regulate the immune response37 and are involved in promoting an inflammatory response. Some of these cytokines also promote hemopoiesis,36 the production of red and white blood cells.25
